English Bulldog Life Expectancy: How Long Do English Bulldogs Live?

English Bulldog life expectancy is shorter than that of most dog breeds. Veterinary and breed sources generally place the English Bulldog lifespan at roughly 6 to 10 years, and a large study from the Royal Veterinary College in the UK found an average of 7.4 years. This article explains where those figures come from, why the breed tends to live shorter lives, and what owners can do to help.

Estimates vary depending on the source:

SourceEnglish Bulldog lifespan
PetMD8 to 10 years
Chewy8 to 10 years
Hepper8 to 10 years
Pawlicy6 to 8 years
Royal Veterinary College VetCompass study (2022)7.4 years on average

Taken together, a realistic range for an English Bulldog is about 7 to 10 years. Breed guides often cite 8 to 10 years for a healthy dog, while the largest study of real veterinary records found a lower average of 7.4 years. That study examined a random sample of 30,563 dogs that died in the UK between 2016 and 2020.

The difference is worth understanding. Breed guides describe what is possible with good care, whereas the study reflects what actually happened to pet dogs.

How does that compare with other dogs?

The same research found that the average life expectancy across all UK companion dogs was 11.2 years, which means the English Bulldog lives close to four years less than the typical dog. The shortest-lived breeds in the study were flat-faced breeds, including bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs.

For comparison, the American Bulldog averaged about 7.8 years in the study, although breed guides often quote 10 years or more for it.

Why do English Bulldogs have a shorter lifespan?

Most of the breed’s health problems stem from its body shape and from inherited conditions. According to PetMD, Chewy and Pawlicy, the most common are:

  • Breathing difficulty (brachycephalic airway syndrome): the short, flat face makes breathing harder, especially in hot weather or during exercise.
  • Skin fold infections: wrinkles can trap moisture and food, which can lead to infection.
  • Hip dysplasia: a malformed hip joint that can cause pain and limit movement.
  • Eye problems: conditions such as entropion, in which the eyelid rolls inward, and cherry eye.
  • Obesity: English Bulldogs gain weight easily, which places extra strain on the heart, joints and airways.

Pawlicy notes that the breed lives a shorter time than other dogs of a similar size because of several inherited health conditions.

How to help your English Bulldog live longer

Genetics cannot be changed, but good care can make a real difference. The following steps appear consistently in veterinary advice:

  • Maintain a healthy weight. Measure meals, and ask your veterinarian what weight is right for your dog. Dogster and Pawlicy both caution that bulldogs overeat and gain weight easily.
  • Protect your dog from heat. Bulldogs can overheat quickly. In warm weather, walk early or late in the day and keep your dog somewhere cool.
  • Clean the skin folds. Wipe and dry the wrinkles regularly to prevent infection.
  • Keep up with veterinary visits. Breathing, joint and eye problems are easier to manage when they are caught early.
  • Choose a puppy carefully. Ask the breeder about health testing and the health of the puppy’s parents.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average lifespan of an English Bulldog?

About 7 to 10 years. A large UK study found an average of 7.4 years, and many breed guides quote 8 to 10 years.

Can an English Bulldog live to 12?

It is uncommon. The sources we reviewed place the upper end of the normal range at about 10 years, so a bulldog that reaches 12 is well beyond typical.

Do English Bulldogs live shorter lives than French Bulldogs?

Breed guides usually give French Bulldogs 10 to 12 years and English Bulldogs 8 to 10 years. Both breeds are flat-faced, and both are among the shorter-lived breeds in the UK study.
